Green Alternatives to Cleaning With Antibacterial Products

December 27th, 2013

Swap antibacterial cleaning products for green alternatives. Source: stock.xchng.

For those looking to go green in Foster City, one of the simplest entries into the green lifestyle is to change out your household cleaning products. If you’re ready to jump right in, get rid of antibacterial cleaning products; not only are they not more effective than some of the green alternatives below, they are also linked to the development of resistant bacteria!

  • Wash your hands frequently and be thorough when you do so. The type of soap used has not been proven to make a difference. It is the quality and frequency of hand washing that reduces the spread of illness in everyday settings.
  • Keep two separate spray bottles: one of white vinegar and one of three percent hydrogen peroxide. Either one can be sprayed first, but what’s important is that spraying these together makes a powerful solution for disinfecting.
  • With a teaspoon of borax, two tablespoons of white vinegar, two cups of hot water, 1/4 teaspoon of lavender essential oil, and three drops tea tree essential oil, you can scrub nearly every hard surface, from gas stove top to your beautiful stone countertops. The only hard surface you shouldn’t apply this mixture to is glass.

Once you are done cleaning don’t forget to tell your friends about how to enjoy the ultimate luxury the green way, here at The Plaza!

Go Paperless in Your Eco-Friendly Apartment with Microfiber

December 18th, 2013

If you’re looking for ways to foster green living at your eco-friendly apartment in Foster City, you might want to ditch paper towels and look into investing in microfiber cloths.

Microfiber is primarily made of polyester, blended with 20% nylon. Compared to paper towels, microfiber proves to be more economically- and environmentally-conscious option, while being more practical, as well

It can be used approximately 300 times, be washed and dried quickly, and be used at the top and bottom of your household without leaving unsightly streaks on your belongings. Microfiber is also more absorbent than its environmentally-destructive paper counterpart.

The best part is you can purchase microfiber cloths for specific cleaning tasks, as they come in a plethora of different weaves and textures. Some examples of specialized uses include microfiber for dusting, shining your oversized windows, and cleaning your hardwood-style flooring.

However, paperless green apartment living doesn’t end with microfiber. Consider swapping your dinner napkins with cloth napkins and using sponges or rags for cleaning up spills!

If, however, you are still in search of an ideal green apartment to call home, don’t hesitate to contact us for more information on renting one of our luxury apartment homes at The Plaza!

Few things say “luxury” more effectively than our Foster City apartment’s designer-selected, cut pile carpeting. We have shared some great ways to keep it fresh and looking new with environmentally friendly methods. Here are some tips to make vacuuming easier and more effective.

  • Minimize the work by avoiding some of it altogether. Position mats at entrances. This will minimize tracking dirt from outside. Dust before vacuuming to catch flying particles.
  • Vacuum frequently to reduce pet hair buildup and keep high-traffic areas spotless.
  • Make sure you select the correct attachment to do the job properly, and make sure to adjust the height appropriately for the pile of the carpet.
  • Take multiple passes with each swipe of the vacuum to pick up as much debris as possible.
  • Avoid overfilling the bag to ensure maximum suction. Keep the filter and the attachments clean for optimal efficiency.
  • Pick up small objects, even if you thing the vacuum can handle them, to avoid damage to the unit.
  • Treat spots with stain remover before they are set permanently.

Creative Cocktail Garnishes for Your Countertop Holiday Setup

The holiday season is here, and that means that it is finally time to take advantage of your apartment’s solid-surface stone countertops and throw a holiday celebration for your friends and family.

When it comes to setting out the cocktails, here are some fun and creative ways you can make the holidays sparkle and shine a little bit brighter.

  • Everything from cinnamon sticks to candied ginger can be used, and each will give your drinks a little bit of extra kick.
  • Grate some chocolate, and use the shavings to coat the froth on whip cream and those hot toddies you’ll be serving up.
  • Don’t forget the power of the berry. Berries make excellent flavor enhancers, and using them is as simple as placing a toothpick through them. They also add a nice splash of color.
  • Finally, don’t forget the season’s favorite garnish. That’s right: the simple, humble candy cane makes a fantastic swizzle stick that will add a touch of spice to any drink. It also makes a great breath mint for those mistletoe kisses.

How to Lower Your Apartment’s TV and Internet Bills

December 4th, 2013

how to save on internet

Compare prices on internet and bundles with our wide selection of services available. Source: stock.xchng.

Everyday we are getting increasingly hooked on the internet. From simple emails and chats, we went to high-speed broadband, capable of delivering HD quality content, even on mobile devices. Most homes and apartments have high-speed internet pre-installed, and The Plaza is no exception.

High-speed internet is more important than ever, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room to cut a few corners and shave a few bucks from your bill. For example, the average cable bill is $75 and is going up, and the same goes for internet bills, provided you don’t use a cable bundle.

There are a few simple ways of reducing internet and cable bills, and the most obvious one is to compare available services and packages. Maybe you can do with fewer channels or a few megabits less. It’s not much of a saving on a monthly level, but it piles up over the years.

Our apartments offer a wide selection of service providers for phone, internet and TV: AT&T, Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network. Do your research, check and compare the prices and bear in mind that if one provider offers a cheap deal on an entry-level package, this does not necessarily mean that other service tiers are cheaper, as well.

If you have friends searching for eco-friendly apartments in Foster City with all the perks of comfortable, modern living like high-speed internet throughout, contact us for more information.
