Paul Martin’s American Grill Coming To San Mateo

December 17th, 2012

Paul Martin’s American Grill is slated to open in San Mateo this coming year.  The new restaurant is going to be housed in the old Crate & Barrell location in Hillsdale Shopping center.
Not familiar with what the American Grill will be serving? Menus vary depending on location but according to the San Mateo Patch article which covered the breaking news…

The menu will rotate seasonally with local and organic produce, seafood from sustainable fisheries, free-range and natural meats and poultry, artisan cheeses, and premium biodynamic wines mainly from California.

Fresh & Local.  When you dine at Paul Martin’s American Grill, it is about what you eat and how it was raised and prepared.  Below is a little insight into their business philosophy. From their website:

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin’s® aims to take diners back to the farm with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced organic produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. Brian and Paul spent more than a year handpicking the sources for Paul Martin’s® menu. The thorough search produced 40 partnerships with thoughtful, local farmstead producers, 80 percent of whom are located in Northern California and with the opening of El Segundo they have developed a great network of local southern California producers as well.

The Grill is very successful in its current California locations (El Segundo, Irvine, Roseville & Westlake Village) and is expected to be well-received in San Mateo according to the Patch article:

“Paul Martin’s American Grill is a welcome addition to our collection of the finest department stores, specialty shops and restaurants in the Bay Area,” said Larry Ivich, General Manager of Hillsdale Shopping Center. “Our customers have been asking for sustainable, organic and locally sourced menu selections at fair prices. Paul Martin’s American Grill will offer them everything they want,” Ivich said.

Yum!

10 Tips for Holiday Travel!

December 8th, 2012

Statistics show flights before noon usually have fewer delays than afternoon ones, so book flights as early in the day as possible.

Germaphobe? Grab a Nano UV Disinfection Scanner. This cell phone–size device disinfects airline seats, hotel beds, and anything else that’s questionable ($80, amazon.com).

Tech Savvy? Bring your Callpod Chargepod. Use the multidevice charger to juice up all your gadgets while plugged into just one outlet. You buy adapters individually, so you get exactly what you need (base, $40; adapters, $10 each; callpod.com).

Save time at security checkpoints by avoiding outfits with big metal belts that will set off the machines or lace-up boots that will take forever to untie and remove. The Transportation Security Administration (tsa.gov) recommends wearing thin-soled slip-on shoes (such as flip-flops) that you can get on and off easily and that won’t need additional screening.

Save space in your suitcase by wearing your heaviest clothes en route. Bundling up will also keep you warm on a chilly flight and help you avoid exceeding the baggage weight limit for checked pieces.

When packing, Roll softer garments and fold stiffer ones. Underwear, T-shirts, jeans, cotton pants, and knitwear won’t wrinkle when rolled tightly. Arrange rolled items in the bottom of the bag. Think of your suitcase as a three-layer cake. The suitcase is the icing; the rolled items make up the first layer.

Make sure to place TSA-banned holiday trappings like maple syrup, cranberry sauce, hand santizer, liquid stain removal sticks and snow globes in your checked luggage—or leave them at home.

If you’ve left a belonging on an airplane call the airline immediately. US Airways holds items at airports for 72 hours before sending them to an offsite lost-and-found office.

When you land, have your ride pick you up at the ticketing or check-in area, where there are fewer people and cars, rather than at arrivals, where crowds loiter with their bags.

One more tip: Don’t wrap anything. Transportation Security Administration personnel are allowed to look inside any package.

Do you have your own Holiday Tree? Here are some tips for Tree Trimmings and Tree Recycling:

Tree Trimming Tips

  • Flocked trees cannot be made into compost due to their chemical content. Ox Mountain Landfill will accept flocked trees for other use.
  • If you choose to use tinsel, make sure that all of it is removed before recycling your tree.
  • Do not bag your tree. If you do, it will not be recycled.
